Image Design

Composition & Image Arrangement

In this course, you’ll learn the basic principles of effective image composition and how to deliberately position subjects within the frame. The focus is on classic and modern compositional rules, such as the Golden Ratio, the Fibonacci spiral, and grid-based thinking as a guide for structured image composition. You’ll understand how visual balance is created and how you can generate clear visual guidance through the deliberate placement of subjects. The goal is to compose images not randomly, but consciously and with control.

Eye Movement & Visual Hierarchy

This course focuses on how to actively guide the viewer’s gaze. You’ll learn how to use intersections, lines, and contrasts to create a clear hierarchy within the image. The goal is to consciously balance the elements so that the main and secondary subjects are immediately apparent. You’ll develop a sense of how an image is “read” and how to deliberately influence that reading process.

Spatial Effect & Depth of Field

Here, you’ll learn how to create a strong sense of depth in two-dimensional photos. The focus is on the strategic use of the foreground, middle ground, and background, as well as how they interact. You’ll understand how depth is created and how you can use layering, perspective, and subject distances to produce vivid, three-dimensional images. The goal is to avoid flat images and create a clear spatial structure.

Image composition in context

In this course, you’ll learn how to intentionally incorporate natural and architectural elements into your compositions. You’ll work with what are known as “frames within frames”—natural frames such as doors, windows, arches, trees, or shadows—to highlight your subjects more effectively. You’ll also explore how to use environmental elements to structure your compositions and how this affects the overall impact of the image.

Conscious Application of Rules & Creative Deviation

This course brings together all the principles of design and shows you when and why to consciously apply or break rules such as the rule of thirds, the grid, or traditional compositional systems. You’ll learn how to create tension through deliberate deviations and develop your own style. The goal is to gain a solid understanding of all the rules so that you can not only apply them but also use or ignore them with confidence.
